The Islands
What Are the Islands? The islands are a symbol of hope. They are visual representations of emotions on restless waters. They act as a visual diary of emotional journey and I've become very fond of the idea that stages of my life can be illustrated in this way. Some islands are lonely, some relaxing, some joyful, some meditative, some desolate, some crumbling away. All are changing and unchanging at the same time. All have history of there own as if I have discovered them, not created them. Despite their variety however, certain things always stay constant, the horizon and the ever changing flow of waters. I created a lot of island sketches out of the feeling of being lost. Lost from my true path and lost from myself. And in creating the islands I somehow create a container for the feelings to stay forever. Creating the islands My mind may seem empty at the time and when the pencil first touches the clear sheet of paper I have no idea what kind of island will come out. It moulds itself into existence without my thorough planning. What you see here are fleeting reflections of emotional places with the water surface acting as an analogy for reflection.
